When was the last time someone said that to you? Ok it probably happens more often to you than to me, but here in Vietnam I get it too 😅
From Ho Chi Minh city we went south to visit the country side in the Mekong delta. It’s a vast region where the Mekong splits into thousands of branches irrigating a wide plain, from the border with Cambodia to the sea.
We went there to see rice fields, we mostly met people. We picked the town of Chau Doc, near the Cambodian border, more or less randomly, because some blog was mentioning it. Then Mary booked a place in Tan Chau, a bit by mistake, and realised afterwards that it was another town 45mins away from Chau Doc. So it’s quite accidentally that we arrived at David’s homestay. David turned out to be a very friendly host. He accompanied us to local restaurants, introduced us to his family, invited us to his home… David and his wife both work as English teachers, in schools during the week and in a language center in the weekend. He introduced us to the director of the center and we were dispatched into classes to help young students learn English. It’s a classic in Asia, and it was great to interact with the kids. The director also was extremely friendly and from the moment we met him, we weren’t allowed to pay for anything anymore! He invited us for breakfast, lunch in his home, dinner, coffee, took us to visit nearby fields, plucked coconuts from his tree… he even paid for the gas in our bike and insisted to give us a ride back from Chau Doc after we return the scooter. It was too much, but very hard to refuse!
In Chau Doc we also visited a temple built on top of lone hill lost in the middle of rice fields, and a bird sanctuary with a lovely boat ride on the Mekong.
Every now and then, a group of kids would say hello and want to take a selfie with us, then giggling a little “you are so good looking” 😅
